 General Information / Background
The Trust began life in 1833 as the Colchester Provident Asylum Society with the aim of supporting older or infirm men of good character with insufficient means to maintain themselves towards the end of their lives, together with their wives or widows.

Six houses were built by the Society in 1836 on a site on the outskirts of Colchester and these were known as Provident Place. These six houses were the foundation of what was to follow. Over the next 170 years more sheltered housing was added, a "rest home" opened in 1956 and in 1989 the Cheviot Nursing Home. In 2002 a second residential home was acquired by the Trust in Clacton.

Today BGT is a non-profit making organisation offering 57 units of sheltered housing and a 40 bed residential home in the centre of Colchester plus a nursing home in Park Road Colchester and a second residential home in Clacton-on-Sea.

The Trust is managed by up to 15 local men and women who work on an entirely voluntary basis. They all have a long involvement with the community through their work or profession and are committed to ensuring that BGT continues to offer the excellence in care and accommodation which is currently provided.
