Arneway Housing Co-op was named after the 18th century philanthropist Thomas Ameway, the Co-op was formed following a series of meetings held in early 1978 at the Kingsway Daycentre for homeless people. The Centre provided a refuge for single homeless people living in large hostels in the West End. Many of these who lived in the hostels found it extremely difficult to obtain permanent housing in the private sector, as it was both scarce and overpriced.
Arneway was formed to house the homeless & to organise itself into a self-managing friendly community, & in becoming a co-operative, it was able to gain access to public funds to purchase, modernise & manage its own properties. The Co-op opened in the spring of 1979, managing short-life properties in Brent, which were on Management Agreements with Network HA, Paddington Churches HA and Brent Council. |
