 General Information / Background
Aksa Housing Association is one of the best performing landlords in the North West, and tenant satisfaction is the best in the country.

Aksa registered with the Housing Corporation in 1990. Originally known as Oldham Muslim Association, the name changed to Aksa following the merger with Bury-based Dar-ul Aman Housing Association in 1995.

It is a charitable Industrial and Provident Society, set up to improve access to rented housing, initially to the Asian communities in Oldham. But it has developed beyond the expectations of those who started the association, and now owns more than 650 homes in Oldham, Manchester, Tameside and Bury.

In the past, Aksa used other housing associations as development partners to help it expand the stock, but more recently has been able to do this successfully in-house. It is one of only two BME developing associations in the region.

In November 2005, Aksa was incorporated as part of the New Charter Housing Trust Group. The alliance strengthens and expands Aksa’s successful development programme with more resources; with New Charter increasing its ability to work within the BME communities and over a wider geographic area.

Entering a group structure with New Charter will have many benefits for tenants. Indeed, residents of Aksa properties are already enjoying the fruits of those benefits, with better pricing of maintenance work and the support of key back-room services such as IT. The move substantially improves Aksa's ability to meet many new challenges it faces.

Aksa has been careful to embrace the respective strengths of both Aksa and New Charter in the new partnership. The two brands will develop side by side for the benefit of Greater Manchester tenants.

Our ability to deliver quality social housing and development programmes with our partners means Aksa can look to the future with optimism.
