The Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Abbeyfield Society is a registered charity and part of the national Abbeyfield Society. It has three ‘very sheltered’ houses within the district for the active elderly, all of which offer an alternative between full independence and a residential care home.
Each of the houses is run by a volunteer management committee which ensures that fees are affordable. In addition for those eligible there may be an entitlement to Income Support or Housing Benefit. Each resident has their own bedroom and bathroom (with walk in shower, toilet and hand basin) as well as access to communal areas.
A house manager prepares two meals a day and residents prepare their own breakfasts using items supplies. Each room is connected to an alarm system so that residents are able to call for assistance and a member of staff always sleeps in to deal with any emergencies overnight. One of our houses also has a small number of flats available which provide a sitting room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen and for which meals are not included. |
